CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATIONS: COMPUTER RESOURCE SPECIALIST
SERIES CONCEPT
Computer Resource Specialists perform a variety of technical and administrative
services related to the acquisition, use and maintenance of computer and/or
network hardware and software and the development of computer applications.
Primary functions include comprehensive desktop support, local area network
administration, assisting in the development of web site capabilities and enhancements,
and wide-area network coordination. Incumbents typically install and maintain
hardware and software systems; utilize and manipulate computer software to create
formats, screens, menus and reports; analyze existing systems; field problems
and make recommendations for computer-oriented solutions; make recommendations
for hardware/software acquisition; and provide training in computer usage.
Technical tasks performed by Computer Resource Specialists may include: implementing
program designs; modifying commercial applications to department specifications;
coding new systems, trouble-shooting, testing, debugging, installing, upgrading,
documenting, and maintaining programs and systems; evaluating hardware and software
products; implementing modem communications and remote access capabilities;
coordinating network and desktop related functions for departmental information
applications, and contributing to the acquisition, use, operation, maintenance,
and support of computer or network applications.
Computer-related administrative tasks performed by Computer Resource Specialists
may include: coordinating area network operations; performing database administrative
tasks; training and assisting users in the access and application of programs;
prioritizing user service orders; participating in the planning and implementation
of department telecommunication and information services; coordinating WEB site
information sharing functions; maintaining system inventories; analyzing office
needs; preparing proposals for purchasing of equipment, supplies and materials;
assigning department user access privileges; and database back up and recovery.
The series consists of two levels based on varying degrees of responsibility;
the size nature and or complexity of the computing environment; and the level
of technical and programming skill required for computer applications.
This series is differentiated from the Programmer/Analyst series by the scope,
nature and complexity of the programming required. It does not encompass the
program design, database or systems development; or systems analysis and consultation
encompassed within the Programmer/Analyst series and wider array of technological
applications is expected in the Programmer/Analyst series.
This series is not intended for positions that use computers as tools (e.g.,
for data analysis, data retrieval, report writing,). Such positions should be
classified according to their primary functional responsibility.
CLASS CONCEPTS
Computer Resource Specialist II - Supervisor
Computer Resource Specialist II
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of operational
level functions in the series. They are expected to have knowledge of and experience
with various desktop and peripheral systems including personal computers and
mainframe systems as well as various operating programs and software applications;
assist in the implementation and operation of area network and WEB development;
perform installation and verification of peripherals such as network cards,
printers, modems, mice and add-in boards; configure network protocol stacks
and test network access; analyze and document reported hardware and software
problems; perform informal training of end users in the use and functioning
of systems; perform interface duties between users and central support groups;
test access capability for users to the network and determine local and external
problems; determine computer work place requirements and support peripheral
additions, moves or changes to current work environment; move systems and maintain
changes in a system log; install, configure, manage and maintain departmental
servers including backup systems; register products and maintain compliance
with campus site license standards.
Computer Resource Specialist I - Supervisor
Computer Resource Specialist I
Under supervision, incumbents provide routine desktop support to users including
trouble-shooting, testing, debugging, installing, upgrading, documenting, and
maintaining programs and systems; consulting on general systems features; maintaining
hardware and software inventory data such as manufacturer, model, serial number,
warranty information, location and user contact; perform routine hardware and
software maintenance, complete virus scans; tracking and responding to daily
requests and problem lists from individual users; maintain license documentation,
manuals and technical documentation. Related administrative tasks typically
include scheduling, producing correspondence, assisting in needs assessment,
supply ordering, and processing purchase orders. This level is differentiated
from the operational level (CRS II) by the routine nature of tasks and the increased
degree of computer-related administrative tasks.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Incumbents are expected to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential
to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the positions.
